France, Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

CIENS held its workshop on Tuesday 27 May, during which Eve Benhamou, a doctoral student in contemporary history, presented a chapter from her thesis currently being written. Her doctoral thesis, entitled: “France, Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict under Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande: from “balance” to strategic reorientation (2002-2017). Ambitions and dilemmas of a middle power in the Middle East”, is being conducted under the supervision of Professor Frédéric Bozo at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3.

Eve Benhamou is interested in several major areas of research:

– Franco-Israeli and Franco-Palestinian relations

– The diplomacy of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

– French foreign policy

– European Union policy in the Middle East

– International relations in the Middle East

In the presence of the CIENS team and associated researchers, her presentation focused on the continuing political and strategic rapprochement between France and Israel after Nicolas Sarkozy came to power, shedding valuable light on the ambitions and dilemmas of a middle power in a region in transformation.

Eve Benhamou taught a course in the second semester entitled “Strategic and nuclear issues in the Middle East”, which will be repeated in semester 2 of the 2025-2026 academic year.
