Nuclear deterrence in France: can we talk about a “consensus”?

As part of the course “History of Deterrence” taught in semester 1 by Frédéric Gloriant, director of CIENS, and Dominique Mongin, historian at the CEA, a round table discussion is being organized on the history of French nuclear defense under the Fifth Republic.

This round table will be moderated by Frédéric Gloriant and will feature the following panelists:

Yannick Pincé, author of Consensus nucléaire français, Les partis politiques et le nucléaire militaire pendant la guerre froide (French Nuclear Consensus: Political Parties and Military Nuclear Power during the Cold War), published by Presses universitaires de Rennes (2025) and

Dominique Mongin, author of L’ultime garantie, une histoire politique de la dissuasion nucléaire française depuis la 1ère cohabitation (1986-2017) (The Ultimate Guarantee: A Political History of French Nuclear Deterrence since the First Cohabitation (1986-2017)), published by Odile Jacob (2025).

Each author will present their work, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
