Mélanie Rosselet, strategic affairs and continental Europe advisor to the Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, and CIENS associate expert, has edited a book, Démocratie(s) et Dissuasion, which has just been published by Editions Odile Jacob.
The texts in this book stem from a study day organized by CIENS and a symposium at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, in honor of the philosopher Thérèse Delpech (1948-2012), whose ideas have influenced many debates on nuclear deterrence. This book is intended as a tribute to her intellectual contribution, and an invitation to explore her thoughts on deterrence in greater depth.
The authors pose several key questions:
What strategic threats do democracies face? Will nuclear deterrence remain an acceptable response? Is it an appropriate response for democratic regimes? What are the stakes and limits of the democratic debate on deterrence?
