The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 left some 30,000 nuclear weapons scattered across the territories of four new sovereign states: Belarus, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. This collapse threw the world into deep uncertainty about the world’s most lethal arsenal of weapons ever created. In Inheriting the Bomb, Mariana Budjeryn re-examines the history of the nuclear difficulties caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent nuclear disarmament of the non-Russian Soviet states that succeeded the Soviet Union.
