MAIN MISSION
The post-doctoral fellow will develop the cyber pole of CIENS’ research and teaching activities.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONTEXT
With a PhD in Human and Social Sciences (law, philosophy, political science, strategic studies, contemporary history, geography, economics, sciences technologies and societies, international relations, sociology) or in Computer Science and Digital Science (with a focus on digital public policy), whose subject will be related to computer security, cybersecurity and/or cyberdefense, the researcher will be recruited by the École normale supérieure / Paris Sciences et Lettres (www. ens.fr), and affiliated to the Centre Interdisciplinaire sur les Enjeux Stratégiques (CIENS, www.ciens.ens.psl.eu).
CIENS is an interdisciplinary teaching and research platform dedicated to nuclear defense and strategic issues in the broadest sense. It is run by a team of 4 teacher-researchers and 1 project manager, and works in cooperation with associate researchers and experts, as well as external practitioners specializing in strategic issues. CIENS courses are taught as part of the ENS diploma and the Master Humanités at ENS-PSL, as well as the Master Géopolitique at Paris 1, Peace Studies at Dauphine, International Relations and Security and Defense at Université Paris II, and International Relations at INALCO. CIENS’ research activities are carried out in cooperation with renowned international partners. CIENS works in partnership with the French Ministry of Defence (DGRIS), the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA) and the French National Agency for Information Systems Security (ANSSI), all of which contribute to the funding of CIENS activities, with the aim of contributing to the development of excellent, independent and internationally recognized scientific research in the fields of defense and strategic issues.
ADMINISTRATIVE AND DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Certain administrative and logistical tasks may be requested on an ad hoc basis, depending on the needs of CIENS:
- Promote CIENS within the ENS (presentation during the Department’s back-to-school meetings, contact with other Departments, regular communication on the School’s media, participation in School events, etc.);
- Liaise with ENS departments;
- Participate in the administrative and logistical management of the Center and its activities, in liaison with ENS central services.
TEACHING SUPPORT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take charge of a 24-hour lecture course on cybersecurity, based on the most recent research findings in this field, as well as the organization of a PSL-Week dedicated to cybersecurity;
- Participate in the organization and design of CIENS teaching activities (courses, seminars, PSL-Weeks)
- Help liaise with CIENS partners for shared courses (INALCO, Paris 1 Sorbonne, Paris 2 Assas, Dauphine…).
RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead a research project on cybersecurity and cyberdefense issues, linking this “new” area of strategic confrontation to the more traditional fields of power relations, and in line with the research themes developed by CIENS (“Europe and nuclear deterrence”; “Strategic knowledge: between academia and expertise”; “New areas of conflictuality”)
- Organize events and seminars to enable the various communities interested in cybersecurity to think together, and create a junction between different fields of analysis concerned with cyber (conflictuality studies, strategic studies, IR, law, AI, etc.);
- Keep abreast of the latest research on cybersecurity
- Write articles and contribute to scientific journals and collective works
- Lead collective research projects within CIENS and with researchers from other ENS departments (Computer Science, Social Sciences, Law, etc.), from PSL and elsewhere;
- Regularly present research results at CIENS seminars and study days, or at international conferences and symposia
- Contribute to the drafting of applications for funding of CIENS team research activities.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE CANDIDATE’S PROFILE:
- proficiency in English (enabling teaching in this language), and/or other languages, will be valued ;
- experience in data analysis using statistical software (e.g. SPSS, R, Stata, etc.) or in the use of computational social science methods will also be an asset.
Non-discrimination, openness and transparency
Our school, like PSL University as a whole, is committed to supporting and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion within its communities. We encourage applications from a wide range of profiles, which we will select through an open and transparent recruitment process.
